A Tip from the Pro - May
"As summer gets here, the warm weather allows for good growing conditions for the rough to get deep. US Open like conditions can prevail in many courses around the country and leave golfers of all levels struggling to get the ball close out of deep rough. When faced with chipping from this deep rough, there are really only 2 options. Either open the club face up full and play the shot like you would a sand shot and hit a few inches behind the ball, "splashing" the whole area with your most lofted wedge. The ball can come out softly this way and allow for a more high risk/high reward result. The other option is a much steeper angle of attack that lets the club stay in the grass for as little time as possible. To do this, the ball should be positioned off your back foot with weight on front foot. Your nose and hands should be slightly ahead of the ball and also choke down on the grip when setting up. To get the steeper angle, use your non gloved hand to set the clubhead going back and hit sharply down just behind the ball. The result will be a lower, running shot that won't stop well but is a safer play to extract your ball out of deep rough."
